Corrupt Printer Driver Package Causes Queue Failures and Driver Unavailable Errors

Description

Affected users across multiple offices and departments experience print jobs that remain stuck in shared queues hosted on Windows print servers. Submitted jobs show zero percent progress or accumulate indefinitely without advancing, and the shared printers appear offline or display "driver unavailable" on client workstations. The issue affects all users mapped to the same server-hosted queue rather than individual machines, blocking routine and time-sensitive printing such as month-end reporting. Stuck job counts range from a handful to over one hundred entries across affected queues. Client-side actions — rebooting workstations, removing and re-adding printers, or clearing local queues — do not resolve the issue.

On the print server, the Print Spooler service logs repeated driver load failures, commonly Event ID 372, as well as codes such as 0x00000709, 2147500037, and ERROR_PRINTER_DRIVER_CORRUPT. Checksum or hash verification of the installed driver package against the approved repository copy confirms a mismatch or corruption, typically introduced by a recent automated deployment, scheduled driver update, or maintenance window. In severe cases the Print Spooler enters a crash loop, generating Event ID 7031 entries.

Restarting the Print Spooler service provides only temporary relief. Jobs may briefly process after a restart but stall again within minutes as the spooler re-encounters the corrupt or mismatched driver package. The issue persists until the corrupted driver package is fully removed from the server's driver store, replaced with the approved version, and affected queue mappings are rebuilt. Local printing methods such as USB-attached printers remain unaffected, confirming the fault is isolated to the server-side driver layer.

Reported variations

  • Some users observe jobs stuck in a "printing" state indefinitely rather than remaining at zero percent in a "spooling" state, or see printers grayed out in the printer list rather than explicitly offline.
  • The Print Spooler service may enter a crash loop (Event ID 7031) rather than remaining running in a degraded state.
  • Queue mappings may reference an older or incorrect driver version that no longer matches the package staged on the server, compounding the unavailable-driver condition.
  • Corruption may result from a partially written driver update leaving a mix of old and new files, an unsigned or improperly signed package, or a Windows cumulative update applied to the print server.
  • In some cases a single queue is affected while others on the same server continue functioning; in others, multiple queues sharing the same driver package fail simultaneously across departments.
  • A prior driver reinstall attempt or queue remap may provide only brief relief before the same failures recur, indicating incomplete earlier remediation.
  • Server-side inspection may reveal specific driver DLL files entirely absent from the expected spool driver directory, indicating an incomplete deployment rather than file-level corruption.
  • In one instance the corrupt driver deployment was traced to a Group Policy Object responsible for driver distribution, requiring correction of the policy in addition to the server-side driver replacement.

Root cause

A corrupt, incomplete, or checksum-mismatched printer driver package on the print server prevents the Windows Print Spooler from loading the driver assigned to shared queues. The corruption is typically introduced during an automated or scheduled driver deployment, leaving the server's driver store in an invalid state that causes recurring driver load failures and blocks all job processing through the affected queues.

Diagnostics

Steps used to confirm this root cause:

  1. Checked the shared print queue state on PS-PRINT01 to confirm whether jobs were paused, stuck, or failing.
    Expected: Print queue is online and accepts new jobs.
  2. Compared the installed print driver package on PS-PRINT01 with the approved HP Universal Print Driver version.
    Expected: Endpoint uses the current approved printer driver.
  3. Reviewed Print Spooler service status and attempted to process a test job through the affected queue.
    Expected: Spooler processes a test job without retry or access errors.

Resolution

Performed by IT support. Representative resolutions from prior cases:

Example 1

  1. Validated that the Finance-Printer queue on PS-PRINT01 was the affected path by reviewing stuck jobs from , , and , and confirmed symptoms matched the HP Universal Print Driver v7.2.1 deployment window (~04:30 UTC on 2026-02-24).
  2. Removed the affected HP Universal Print Driver v7.2.1 package instance from PS-PRINT01 using printmanagement.msc and reinstalled the approved driver package from the central repository (\corplabs-repo\drivers\hp-upd-7.2.1) to replace the corrupted installation. File hashes were verified post-install.
  3. Cleared all 14 stuck jobs from the Finance-Printer queue so previously failed spool files from (), , and () would not continue referencing the bad driver state.
  4. Restarted the Print Spooler service on PS-PRINT01 to reload the freshly installed HP Universal Print Driver v7.2.1 package and reset queue processing. Confirmed no Event ID 372 warnings reappeared in the System log.
  5. Remapped the Finance-Printer queue to the newly reinstalled HP Universal Print Driver v7.2.1 and verified that new test jobs from (, ) and (, ) processed successfully for office finance-area printing. Notified affected users via that printing was restored.

Example 2

  1. Removed the corrupt printer driver package from PrintServer01 using Print Management so the failed package was no longer referenced by affected queues. Removal performed by () under change authorization from .
  2. Installed the approved HP Universal Print Driver v3.2.1 from the vendor repository and confirmed the driver package loaded without mismatch errors. Installation validated by on PrintServer01.
  3. Cleared all stuck print jobs from the affected queues (including 14 jobs from users in ) and restarted the Print Spooler service to reset the print subsystem.
  4. Remapped the impacted printer queues to the newly installed approved driver and verified the printers returned to an online state. Confirmed with and that their workstations could see the printers as online.
  5. Submitted test print jobs through the affected queues from and and monitored queue processing for two hours to confirm jobs completed successfully without recurring spool failures. Final confirmation received from at 18:55.
